Dear Daisy Dog: Can you suggest a recipe for homemade dog bones? I want to offer healthy treats to the neighborhood dogs this Christmas.

Daisy Responds:

Thanks for your question. I hope it stimulates Mom to make bones for the four dogs in my family.

Here are two recipes sure to make your lucky dog friends drool.

Basic Dog Bones

Ingredients:

2 cups whole wheat flour
½ cup corn meal
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
½ cup smooth peanut butter
2 eggs
1/4 cup beef broth

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease cookie sheets.
  • Combine ingredients in a large bowl.
  • Knead dough for 2 to 3 minutes, until it holds together well. Add additional beef broth if dough is too stiff. Allow dough to rest for 30 minutes.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to ½ inch thickness. Cut into dog bone shapes with cookie cutter or knife.
  • Place 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheets. Bake approximately 30 minutes, until golden brown.
