Dear Christopher Cat: We moved into a new home that is surrounded by liriope, also called lilyturf and turf lily. My cats chew on it, but I remember your column warning that lilies cause kidney failure in cats. Is liriope also toxic to cats?

Christopher Responds: Despite its nickname, liriope isn’t a true lily and isn’t toxic when chewed. If your cats actually swallow it, though, they may vomit, as the long grass-like leaves can irritate the stomach.

On the other hand, true lilies cause kidney failure in cats. If your cats continue to venture outdoors at your new home, dig up and give away any lilies on your property.
