Dear Frank B. Ferret
What are the best treats for my ferret?
Frank Responds
Most of us ferrets are very fond of sweet treats and cereal. Unfortunately, neither is good for us.
Treats high in cereal grains, especially corn, may lead to the formation of bladder stones. And snacks high in sugar are hard on the pancreas.
As carnivores, we require lots of protein and fat, but very little fiber.
So it’s best to treat us with meat scraps or meat baby food. Also, liver and fish flavored cat treats are yummy and healthy for us.
Another treat to consider is fresh fruit, but it should be offered at no more than one teaspoon per day.
My favorite snack is Nutrical, which Mom reserves for toenail trimming. She squeezes the Nutrical onto a tongue depressor, and I lick it off while she trims my nails.
We ferrets appreciate treats as much as you humans do. Just make sure our snacks are high in protein, please.
