Dear Daisy Dog

My dog, Ruby, and I put on weight over the holidays. What advice do you have to help her lose a few pounds?

Daisy Responds

I maintain my girlish figure by remembering to expend a few more calories in activity than I consume in food. To help Ruby lose weight, keep both concepts in mind.

She’ll consume fewer calories if you cut out treats and feed smaller meals. If her food portion size is already small, make a gradual transition to a lower-calorie food, such as Hill’s Prescription Diet r/d, a reducing diet available through your veterinarian.

You and Ruby can lose weight together by adding a nice long walk to her daily regimen.

Also, you can increase Ruby’s activity if you take her swimming at an indoor dog pool or enroll her at a dog physical rehabilitation center that has an underwater treadmill.

Best wishes to both of you for a new year of lean good health.
