Dear Daisy Dog

How do you feel about rawhide chews?

Daisy Responds

I enjoy them, and Mom says they’re good for my teeth and gums.

A number of studies show that chewing rawhides can decrease tartar and gingivitis.

In an experiment recently reported in the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry, two groups of dogs eating the same dry food were compared a month after one group was allowed to chew rawhide daily. The other group was denied the pleasure.

The rawhide chewers had 19 percent less plaque, 28 percent less tartar and 46 less gingivitis than the dogs that didn’t get rawhide.

To minimize problems caused by toxins or bacterial contamination, choose rawhides produced as close to home as possible, and stick with one brand.

Always supervise your dog during chewing sessions. If he tries to swallow a large hunk of rawhide, take it away so it can’t obstruct his gastrointestinal tract.
