Dear Daisy Dog

I’d like to take my dog trick-or-treating. He’s a Cairn terrier, so he’ll go as Toto, and I’ll dress as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. Other than keeping him away from chocolate, which I know is toxic to dogs, do you have any advice?

Daisy Responds

I would be frightened by costumed monsters shrieking and jumping out of the dark toward me. If you’re certain your Toto would enjoy such a scary evening, then take him along, but watch closely for signs that he’s had enough.

Outfit him with a reflective harness and leash as well as an identification tag and a microchip, in case he gets away from you.

As much as possible, keep him in a basket like Dorothy used for her Toto. It will prevent him from scavenging discarded candy, gum and wrappers from the ground. Even sugar-free treats can poison us dogs.

Dorothy’s Toto did not wear a costume, but if your Toto must, make sure it doesn’t restrict his movement, vision, breathing or hearing.

Stay away from candles in Jack-o-Lanterns and other displays, not only to keep Toto safe but to prevent him from toppling a candle and starting a fire.

And please don’t come by my house. I’m afraid of trick-or-treaters, so I’ll be hiding in a back bedroom.
