Dear Daisy Dog

To celebrate my birthday, my parents take my brothers and me out to dinner at the restaurant of my choice. How can I make my dog’s birthday special?

Daisy Responds

You’re a kid after my own heart!

On my birthday, my parents usually give me a couple of new toys.

But I like the idea of a festive restaurant meal. If there’s an outdoor café that welcomes dogs, take your pooch there.

Some dog-friendly eateries offer special meals for us canines. If you can’t find such a restaurant, cook for your pup. Check our Web site for homemade dog bone recipes, or buy a pet cookbook.

Another gift idea is a doggie vacation, such as canine summer camp. You’ll find plenty to choose from online.

Better yet, give your dog a gift that lasts all year: a weekly class with you. Sign up for an agility class and run obstacle courses together. Join an obedience training club and compete together for awards. Or enroll in a therapy dog class and visit people who need a friendly canine to brighten their lives.

If your dog is like me, he’ll feel that some extra hours with you is the best gift imaginable.
