Dear Daisy Dog

Should my puppy start training classes at six months of age?

Daisy Responds

Start as soon as possible after your puppy receives his first vaccination.

Puppy kindergarten will help socialize your pup and teach him good manners.

Socialization helps us dogs gain self-confidence in novel situations – such as encountering a tall man wearing a uniform and hat, a child on crutches, a pond, umbrellas or loud trucks – so we’re not frightened as adults.

The socialization period for novel situations spans five to 16 weeks of age, so it’s important to start your pup’s training early.

Unfortunately, I was born and raised in an isolated cage, so I missed this important socialization. As a consequence, I fear most new experiences.

Conversely, my Irish wolfhound brother Ollie learned early that novel situations, people and dogs were fun, so he greets them with a smile and a wag of his tail.

Give your new pup the gift of self-confidence by starting his socialization and training now.
