Dear Daisy Dog

Do dogs get headaches? Huntz, my 10-year-old dachshund, has allergies and sinus problems. Sometimes on damp or rainy days, he seems sluggish, and I wonder if he has a headache. My veterinarian can’t find anything wrong with him. Is it safe to give Huntz aspirin?

Daisy Responds

Yes, some of us dogs do get headaches.

When my sister Molly had a headache, she moped around and crouched when anyone tried to pet her head.

For headache pain, anti-inflammatory pain relievers approved by the Food and Drug Administration for us dogs are safer and probably more effective than aspirin.

Common trade names are Deramaxx, Metacam, Previcox and Rimadyl.

Ask your veterinarian if one of them might help Huntz.
