Dear Daisy Dog

Hallelujah, my 1-year-old yellow Lab, needs a buddy. He tries to play with my four cats, but they will have none of it. I have been thinking about getting Hal a pet shop puppy that is smaller and a bit calmer. Is it right to get another dog as a playmate?

Daisy Responds

Sure. Christopher Cat roughhouses with me, but if your cats won’t play with Hal, getting him a dog friend is a great idea.

Don’t be so quick to buy a puppy, though. It’s easier to evaluate an adult’s temperament than a puppy’s, and a mature adult will calm Hal better than a lively pup.

Chances are, the perfect playmate for Hal is waiting for him at the animal shelter.

There you and Hal will meet many dogs, and the shelter staff will be glad to tell you about the personality of each one.

So take Hal to the shelter and let him choose his new best friend.
