Dear Daisy Dog

We have two small-breed dogs, one slim and the other overweight. Our veterinarian told us the heavy dog must lose weight, but we’re not sure how to accomplish that without starving the slim guy.

We leave dry food out all day and refill the bowl when it is empty. Should we switch to a low calorie food?

Daisy Responds

You’ll need to change the way you feed your dogs. I think our family’s method will work for you.

Mom feeds us dogs morning and evening. At meal time, she puts down a bowl for each of us.

Sam inhales his low calorie food in about 10 seconds. Jack nibbles steadily at his regular adult food – that is, when Christopher Cat isn’t around to intimidate him. I need to be coaxed to finish my senior food.

Mom stands guard to protect Jack from Christopher and to prevent Sam from finishing my food when I don’t.

If you use our family’s technique, you can feed each dog exactly what’s needed. Ask your veterinarian what food – and how much – to feed each dog.
