Dear Christopher Cat

I read about leptospirosis in dogs. My cats venture outside on nice days. Can they get leptospirosis? Should I have them vaccinated?

Christopher Responds

Fortunately, we cats don’t get sick with leptospirosis (“lepto”) -– one more way cats are superior to dogs.

In research studies, scientists inoculated cats with the Leptospira bacteria that cause lepto. The cats tested positive, but their antibodies destroyed the bacteria before any disease was evident.

Since our superior immune systems protect us from developing clinical signs of leptospirosis, no vaccine has been developed.
