Dear Christopher Cat

Are “natural” products safe for my cats?

Christopher Responds

Not necessarily.

For example, pennyroyal, an ingredient in some flea products, can cause vomiting, respiratory difficulty, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver failure, seizures, coma and death.

Comfrey, sometimes recommended for fractures and skin problems, can cause liver disease and cancer in pets.

The antioxidant ALA (alpha-lipoic acid), which is 10 times more toxic in cats than dogs, can cause hypoglycemia, liver damage and kidney failure.

So remember, “natural” does not always mean “safe.” When you’re uncertain about a product, check with your veterinarian.
