Dear Christopher Cat

My cat Barney has hyperthyroidism and will require medication for the remainder of his life. I’d like to order it online, but I’m told I shouldn’t trust all Internet pharmacies. Can you tell me which are reliable?

Christopher Responds

Barney probably takes methimazole, also known by its veterinary brand name, Felimazole, and its human pharmaceutical trade name, Tapazole.

Methimazole is relatively inexpensive, and it’s widely available through veterinarians, local drug stores and Internet pharmacies.

If you decide to purchase it online, visit www.nabp.net to look for Internet pharmacies accredited by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.

The NABP established the Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites program and its veterinary counterpart, Vet-VIPPS, to help consumers differentiate legitimate online pharmacies from illegal ones.

Round out Barney’s thyroid treatment by having his veterinarian check him every six months and run lab work at least annually.
