Dear Christopher Cat

I use Feline Pine pellet cat litter, which I love because it doesn’t track and isn’t dusty. A friend with a wood pellet stove suggested I use the wood fuel pellets she burns, because they’re much less expensive. Are these safe for cats?

Christopher Responds

Your friend should receive an award for her money-saving idea.

Mom checked with a veterinary toxicologist who confirmed their safety.

So, without telling me, she converted one of our litter boxes from Feline Pine pellets, which we’d been using, to wood fuel pellets. I couldn’t tell the difference initially, but when I returned to the box, I realized that the wood fuel pellets hadn't neutralized the urine odor as well as the Feline Pine pellets had.
