Dear Christopher Cat

Our new kitten has lice, for which the veterinarian applied Frontline Plus. I didn’t think to ask two important questions: Will the lice jump to my young daughter, who shares her pillow with the kitten every night? And do I need to fumigate the house?

Christopher Responds

I’m as close to perfection as a cat can get, so it won’t surprise you to learn that I’ve never had lice.

But a stray cat we adopted years ago had them, and I learned then that each type of louse resides on just one animal species.

That means your kitten’s lice won’t infect your daughter – and, if your daughter ever catches head lice from her friends, her lice won’t jump onto your kitten.

Not only are lice species-specific, but they don’t survive long off their animal host. So it’s not necessary to spray or otherwise treat your home.

Frontline Plus should kill all the lice, including those that hatch from the eggs, or nits, attached to your kitten’s fur.

With nothing left to worry about, you can spend your time playing with your new kitten.
