Dear Christopher Cat

I am confined to my home with a terrible case of pinkeye. I can’t have visitors, because pinkeye is very contagious.

Thank goodness I have my cats, who love to cuddle. But I’m worried they might catch my pinkeye. Is that possible?

Christopher Responds

No. Human pinkeye, or acute bacterial conjunctivitis, is caused by any of a number of bacteria. The disease is specific to you humans, and it is not transmitted to us cats — or to dogs, for that matter.

We cats can develop our own version of conjunctivitis, but we can’t catch yours.

So feel free to cuddle with your cats as much as you like. After all, everyone knows that cuddling cats promotes healing.
