Dear Christopher Cat

I just adopted my first cat. Should I feed dry or canned food – or both?

Christopher Responds

All five cats in my family eat dry food. I like it, because its crunchy texture cleans my teeth.

Besides, Mom doesn’t have to scale and polish my teeth as often as if I ate canned food, which sticks to the teeth and promotes tartar and gingivitis.

Moreover, one study implicated canned food in the development of hyperthyroidism.

In short, if your cat is healthy, dry food will serve you both well.

On the other hand, if your cat has urinary problems for which your veterinarian recommends extra water, you may want to add canned food to your cat’s diet, because it’s approximately 80 percent water.

Another way to ensure adequate water intake is to provide a pet fountain. Its perpetually running water entices me to drink, so I’m always well hydrated.
