Dear Christopher Cat

My name is Snow, and I am a 17-year-old female cat. I eat dry and canned food, and I am energetic. But every time I visit the litter pan, I produce loose, watery stools. Is there something my human can buy at the pet store for this problem?

Christopher Responds

It’s doubtful, but it’s worth a try.

Discontinue your canned food, and make a gradual transition from dry food to Tender Vittles semi-moist food.

If the diarrhea persists, see your veterinarian. It might result from a simple physical problem, like an overactive thyroid gland.

If that’s the case, treatment of your hyperthyroidism will firm up your stools.

When you visit your veterinarian, take along a fresh sample of your diarrhea for examination under the microscope. If parasites are the problem, medication will stop the diarrhea.

Unfortunately, different medications kill different parasites, so your human can’t purchase just one pill to kill them all.

Once your veterinarian determines the cause of your diarrhea, effective treatment can begin.
