Dear Christopher Cat

This spring, I would like to apply K9 Advantix to my dog’s skin, because it repels and kills fleas, ticks and mosquitos. However, I read that it is toxic to cats, and I am worried that it might poison my cat, who likes to groom my dog. Is my concern justified?

Christopher Responds

Yes and no.

K9 Advantix contains permethrin, an insecticide that is extremely toxic to us cats. No permethrin-containing product should ever be used on cats.

However, according to the manufacturer, K9 Advantix can be used safely on dogs that live with cats, even cats that groom their dog friends, as long as it dries before the cat and dog play together.

That’s good, because I like to flop down next to Daisy Dog, throw my arms around her neck, and lick her face.

I also like to groom Dougie, my feline brother. He spends all his time indoors, but this week, I found a flea on him.

Mom is going to treat him and the rest of us cats with a cat-safe product, like Advantage, Frontline or Revolution. And the dogs will get one of those topical products or K9 Advantix.
