Dear Christopher Cat

Does my indoor-outdoor cat need to wear a rabies tag? He keeps losing his collar.

Christopher Responds

He isn’t required to wear a rabies tag, but he should have some kind of identification.

Even when I lose my collar, I carry permanent identification in the form of a microchip. Years ago, Mom inserted it under my skin near my shoulder blades.

If I ever get lost and someone takes me to a shelter or animal hospital, my microchip will be scanned.

My chip’s unique number will help the staff find my family.
Sad to say, some of us family cats are taken in by people who assume we’re strays. Without a microchip, we’re unlikely to see our families again.

Worse, a stolen animal without a microchip probably won’t be reunited with his people, who, even if they find him, may be unable to prove ownership.

February 14 is Pet Theft Awareness Day, sponsored by Last Chance for Animals. For more information on protecting your pet, visit their Web site at www.stolenpets.com/protect.htm.
