Dear Christopher Cat

Our cat Jasper loves to climb trees. Sometimes he goes so high, I’m afraid he won’t be able to get down.

He always has found his way to the ground – but if he ever gets stuck up there, how should I get him down?

Christopher Responds

On those occasions when I sneak outside, I stay on the ground. I suppose I wouldn’t have to worry about dogs chasing me if I were up a tree, but I still feel safer with all four feet on solid earth.

We cats are smarter and more agile than you think, so I’m sure Jasper will continue to make it down on his own.
But if he ever ventures too far up the tree, here’s a trick that’s sure to lure him down.

At dusk, open a can of especially aromatic fish or cat food, and leave it at the base of the tree. Leave your windows open so you can hear him meow when he’s on the ground and ready to come inside.

If he’s still marooned in the morning, call a tree surgeon, the utility company or the fire department.
