Dear Christopher Cat

My name is Precious, and I am writing because I am very fussy about cat litter.

I refuse to use scented litter, but my mom is having trouble finding the unscented clumping litter I like. What will we do if they stop making it altogether?

Christopher Responds

It’s unlikely they’ll stop making unscented clumping litter, Precious, because it’s so popular, though you might have to try a different brand.

Your mom can help accustom you to an additional brand or type of litter by offering it in a new box, preferably a large one.

My favorite litter is Feline Pine, a pellet litter that disintegrates into odor-free sawdust when wet. Other types of unscented litters I’ve tried are made from wheat, corncobs and newspaper.

You might also consider unscented clay litter or one of the new crystal or pearl litters.

To increase the likelihood that you’ll use the new litter as well as the old one, your mom should clean your boxes twice daily, rather than once.

Homes should have multiple litter boxes – at least one more box than the number of cats – and multistory homes need at least one box on every level. If your mom thinks you’re demanding, ignore her. We cats deserve to be pampered.
