Dear Christopher Cat

Soon after my friend’s new carpeting was installed, her cat began to lose clumps of hair. Are the two events related?

Christopher Responds

It’s possible, but unlikely.
While contact sensitivity to carpeting has been reported, it is rare in cats.

More frequent causes of feline hair loss are fleas, ringworm, mites, hyperthyroidism and allergies to foods or inhalants, such as mold, pollen or dust. The veterinarian can determine which of these is the culprit.
