Dear Christopher Cat

I would like to put a harness on my cat. Would a dog harness with two straps under the belly work?

Christopher Responds

When I’m out walking on a leash, I wear a handsome red harness made just for cats. It’s lightweight and it fits well, and I’d recommend one for your cat.

The straps on my harness are narrow and comfortable. A matching leash completes the ensemble.

Purchase a cat harness that’s right for your cat’s weight, and adjust it to fit snugly but not too tightly.

It’s best to accustom your cat to the harness and leash gradually. Start with short outings, and let him decide where you both go at first.

Before long, the two of you will be impressing your neighbors with your daily walks.

By the way, don’t use a cat collar for leash walking. Unlike harnesses, which are meant to fit securely, most cat collars are designed to come off easily when pulled.

This means that if they get caught on something, they stretch – or the quick-release closure opens – so the cat isn’t strangled.
