Dear Christopher Cat

I have two questions. First, whenever I walk by my cat in the kitchen, he runs over to his food bowl and eats. What is this behavior all about?

Second, is cat grass from the pet supply store safe?

Christopher Responds

In answer to your first question, some cats are social eaters. Like my brother Dom, they enjoy having an audience.

Some social eaters put on weight, especially if their people talk with them and pet them while they eat.

If that happens to your cat, ignore him when he eats or move the food bowl to a room you don’t use much. Your cat will still eat, but only when he’s hungry.

With regard to cat grass, I enjoy a nibble now and then. Many cats delight in eating oat and wheat grasses, which are generally quite safe.

However, I have known occasional cats who eat too much at one time and then vomit green gunk around the house. So supervise your cat when you introduce the grass.
