Dear Christopher Cat
I am looking for a year-end gift for my son’s fourth grade teacher who loves animals. Can you suggest something unusual?
If your son would like to show his admiration for his teacher by giving her something special, let me suggest one of the following gifts.
1. Adopt her classroom by providing a subscription to KIND (Kids in Nature’s Defense) News, which teaches elementary students about respecting animals, people and the environment.
Each month of the school year, your son’s teacher will receive a teacher’s guide and 32 copies of the newspaper written for her students’ grade level.
The cost is $30 per year. Contact the National Association for Humane and Environmental Education at www.nahee.org or 860-434-8666.
2. Make a donation in the teacher’s honor to the American Humane Association, which promotes the well-being and protection of both animals and children. Contact them at www.americanhumane.org or call their toll-free number, 1-866-242-1877.
3. Donate a flock of chickens in the teacher’s name to Heifer International to help children and families around the world become self-reliant.
Chickens produce eggs, which provide children with much-needed protein and their families with income from selling extra eggs. As the flock grows, recipients give some of their chickens to neighbors who need them.
Other animals and trees are also available for donation. The gift includes education in environmentally sound, sustainable agriculture methods.
