Dear Christopher Cat

I always wanted to be a vet.  It wasn't meant to be, but I'd still like to help animals.  What can I do?

Christopher Responds

Thanks for wanting to help!  I suggest a visit to your local animal shelter.  Offer to walk dogs and socialize with the cats and other animals.  Visit elementary schools and teach the children how to show respect and take responsibility for animals.  Write or edit the shelter's newsletter or website.  Help raise funds for the shelter.

Contact the Humane Society of the United States (www.hsus.org or 202-452-1100.)  They will alert you via e-mail about timely legislative and judicial issues and tell you who to contact to voice your position on each issue.

Call animal rescue groups in your area.  They are devoted to a particular species (e.g., cat or ferret) or breed (e.g., golden retriever), and they find permanent adoptive families for unwanted pets.  Volunteer as a foster care provider for pets awaiting adoption, or ask what other ways you can help.
